Chair of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC), Arsjad Rasjid, appreciates the successful transformation process taking place in Laos, which has successfully positioned Laos as an important transportation hub in the Southeast Asian region.<\/p>\n
Visionary planning and successful execution of the transformation have not only had a significant impact on reducing logistics costs but also accelerated economic development in Laos.<\/p>\n
\"The inauguration of the Laos-China Railway Network in December 2021 marked a turning point in the development of the transportation sector in Laos. This, of course, has a significant impact on logistics costs. The journey from Vientiane to Boten in China, which usually takes 15 hours by vehicle, now only takes four hours by train,\" said Arsjad in Vientiane, the Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR) (02\/06\/2023).<\/p>\n
Arsjad and the delegation were in Laos from May 31 to June 2, 2023, as part of Indonesia's leadership roadshow at ASEAN-BAC for the year 2023. Previously, Arsjad conducted roadshows in Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei Darussalam, Myanmar, and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n
In addition to meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Laos, H.E. Saleumxay Kommasith, the ASEAN-BAC delegation also held dialogues with the business practitioners, including senior members of the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI).<\/p>\n
Currently, Laos is actively building the Laos Logistic Ecosystem (LLL), and Indonesia is ready to establish cooperation in the logistics and transportation sector in Vientiane. \"As the Chairman of ASEAN-BAC, we are ready to establish cooperation in developing the Laos Logistic Ecosystem as a best practice from Indonesia in the logistics and transportation sector at the Vientiane Logistic Park,\" explained Arsjad.<\/p>\n
The Laos government has initiated the Vientiane Logistics Park (VLP) as a priority program outlined in the Logistics Development Strategy. The VLP project is expected to transform the Lao PDR into a country connected to the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) because this location will serve as a distribution center between ASEAN and China after the completion of the Laos-China railway project in December 2021.<\/p>\n
Laos' Commitment to Renewable Energy Development<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Arsjad revealed that Laos has emerged as a key player in renewable energy, with over 70 operational dams and a total generation capacity of around 8,000 MW.<\/p>\n
Laos' commitment to sustainable energy aligns with ASEAN's vision for a greener future. \"We see that Laos actively participates in international energy trade for regional energy security. We appreciate Laos' remarkable achievements in becoming the 'battery of Southeast Asia' and its contributions to energy resilience, economic growth, and sustainable development goals in the Southeast Asian region,\" expressed Arsjad.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Alternate Chair of ASEAN-BAC, Bernardino Vega, highlighted Lao PDR\u2019s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality, a balance between carbon emissions and carbon absorption.<\/p>\n
He stated that Laos' efforts are in line with those of Indonesia to achieve the target of net-zero emissions (NZE) or carbon neutrality by 2060 and the empowerment of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in agriculture through an inclusive closed-loop model,\" said Dino.<\/p>\n
\"This is crucial as it becomes our strength in Southeast Asia. In Indonesia, companies such as Sinar Mas Land, Bakrie Group, and Mayora Group are actively involved in efforts to achieve NZE targets and enhance the competencies of MSMEs,\" explained Dino.<\/p>\n
Dino added that Sinar Mas Land, as one of the largest property developers in Indonesia, is actively reducing carbon emissions through the use of renewable energy for green electricity consumption and the utilization of renewable energy certificates (REC) from PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero).<\/p>\n
President Director of Sinar Mas Land, Muktar Widjaja, revealed that PT PLN will supply renewable electricity through REC totaling 613 megawatt-hours (MWh) to five buildings owned by the Sinar Mas Land Group, namely Sinar Mas Land Plaza BSD, Sinar Mas Land Plaza Thamrin, MyRepublic Plaza BSD, Traveloka Campus, and Green Office Park 9 BSD.<\/p>\n
Regarding the digital ecosystem, Dino appreciated Laos' strategic steps in participating in the digitalization of the financial system involving Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through the ASEAN QR Code system, which connects QR codes for national and cross-border payments within the Southeast Asian region.<\/p>\n
\"I am optimistic that through these various cooperation efforts, Laos will become a central connectivity point among ASEAN countries and will also chair ASEAN-BAC in the coming year,\" concluded Arsjad.<\/p>\n
